Modesta Conner Bailey
February 18, 1929 - April 15, 2015

Modesta C. Bailey of Claymont, DE, died peacefully on April 15, 2015, at Singerly Manor Assisted Living Home, Elkton, MD. She was 86.

Mrs. Bailey was born February 18, 1929, in Landenberg, PA, the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Weaver Conner. She graduated from Kennett Consolidated High School in 1946. She married the late Paul E. Bailey on December 23,1950, and they were married for 59 years.

Mrs Bailey worked briefly for Hercules Corp. in the late 40's and early 50's. For over 45 years she worked along side Paul as bookkeeper for their business, Arctic Refrigeration. She was a caregiver the majority of her life, first helping with her siblings when her father died and then raising her three children. Mrs Bailey enjoyed reading and volunteering in her community. She was truly a giving person.

As a member of the United Methodist Church of the Atonement, Claymont, DE, for over 60 years, Mrs Bailey held several positions including trustee, finance board, counter and altar guild. In addition, she was involved in organizing and preparing many church dinners and funeral luncheons as well as preparing meals for Emmanuel Dining Room for the Poor and Homeless in Wilmington, DE.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bailey is predeceased by her husband Paul E. Bailey, (2010), her daughter, Carol Ann Bailey (1990), four brothers, Charles, Levan, Argyle and Bill; and one sister, Laura McClure.

Mrs Bailey is survived by her son, Jay E. Bailey and his wife Leigh (Bear, DE); and her daughter, Susan B. Schauber and her husband Allan (Chestertown, MD). In addition, Mrs Bailey is survived by three granddaughters, Jennifer L. Bailey, Rachel M. Bailey, Elizabeth A. Bailey & her fiance Earl Bradley, all of Bear, DE; one grandson, Andrew A. Franklin & his wife Jacqueline of Worton, MD; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor A. Franklin & Andrew A “Drew” Franklin, Jr., both of Worton, MD. Mrs Bailey is also survived by a sister, Barbara Cloud and her husband Phillip; three brothers-in-law, Rodger Bailey and wife Betty, Col. Norman Martin and Raymond McClure; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday April 25, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of the Atonement, Claymont, DE. Friends and family may visit at the church after 10 a.m.
